Think of it as the new Gold Coast. Sure, there are breathtaking views to be had from the top of the best-known hills in San Francisco, but the outlooks from Golden Gate Heights are still a bit of a secret. (Not for long!) Sweeping from Downtown San Francisco, to across the Bay and out to the Pacific Ocean, the vistas from this lesser-known hill are astounding.
The neighborhood is quiet and private, and has parks, playgrounds, tennis courts, basketball courts, picnic spots and wonderful walks. Perched midway between two thriving commercial districts—Inner Sunset and along West Portal—the area offers plenty of eateries, shops and diversions. Hidden in plain sight, Golden Gate Heights is centrally located and has good public transportation options nearby.
Architectural styles are diverse, although early 20th Century properties are far and few between. Many residences have been designed to take advantage of the hilly topography and the wonderful panoramas.
Many enchanting surprises await the urban explorer of Golden Gate Heights, though the best secrets can only be found on foot: Start by finding the colorful stairway that substitutes for Moraga between 15th and 16th Avenues. You'll be amazed!
